Why the title of this post is really important For the last 6 days, I’ve been at the Vision Sciences Society conference in Florida! The view from our hotel room. As its name indicates, this conference is dedicated to the study of human visionâ€"figuring out how and why the human visual system works the way it does. The conference covers everything from computational models for describing human behavior in response to visual stimuli to neuroscience experiments to tease out what parts of the brain process which visual cues. The conference lasted for six very intense days. Each day, there were two different poster sessions and eight presentation sessions, with one poster session and two talk sessions all running concurrently. Part of the schedule for last Tuesdaythere was a lot going on! Topics of the presentation sessions included perception (how the visual system actually represents visual stimuli inside our brains), memory (how the brain retrieves information once it has been viewed and absorbed), attention (what people focus on when shown a visual stimulus), brain scanning, visual search, and much more. My favorite talk session was actually the first one I attended. It was a symposium on vision science and visualizations that my research supervisor, Zoya Bylinskii, helped organize. Speakers talked about methods to approximate where people look on a visualization, what computations our brains might actually be doing when we see a bar chart, and the effects of color on how we interpret a chart or graph. The visualization symposium got a big crowd! Poster sessions give people the opportunity to present research they have been working on (which could potentially be exploratory or in-progress) by making a poster of their work and discussing it with other researchers. Literally hundreds of people set up their posters in the same room, and conference attendees can browse through the different displays to check out what people are working on. If a piece of research looks interesting, they can ask the author to explain the project, and you can have an in-depth, interesting discussion that lets the conference attendees learn about breaking research in their fields and lets researchers get feedback or suggestions on their projects. I actually ended up liking the poster sessions even better than the talks, because I could choose which projects seemed interesting or relevant to me and then engage in an interactive, critical discussion with the researcher. One of the poster sessions. There was also a keynote speech by Professor Kenneth Catania of Vanderbilt, a biologist who investigates the fascinating habits of some of the most exotic animals on the Earth. He talked about the incredibly sensitive nose of the star-nosed mole and how its probing gestures resemble those of the human eye, as well as the complex hunting strategies of the electric eel and the tentacled snake. I was there to present a poster of the work I’ve been doing at my UROP this year! My poster! Heres a link to the full-size version. I’ve been looking at how changing the title of a graph can affect how people remember the data it containsâ€"specifically, its slope. Previous research has already found that titles are a really important part of visualizationsâ€"they are where people spend the most time looking and play a large part in determining how memorable a visualization is. Titles are also most effective when they contain the main message of the visualizationâ€"but if that message is biased or one-sided, it can effectively bias how people interpret the data contained in a graph. We wanted to run a really controlled experiment to see if small changes in a graph’s titleâ€"in this case, a single wordâ€"can affect how people report its content. First, we had to come up with some titles. All of our titles were of the form: “adjective increase/decrease in two-word topic”: for instance, “Substantial increase in voter turnout”. The intensity of the first word, the adjective, was the independent variable we were controlling. So we needed to come up with a ranking of different adjectives based on how “intense” of a trend they implied. We did this by collecting a list of 22 adjectives that could be used to describe a trend or a slope. We then presented pairs of these words to crowdsourced workers and asked them to choose which of the two options they thought was “more intense when inserted into the phrase ‘a ______ change’”. After collecting 15 votes per word pair, we used these pairwise comparisons to rank our list. Our final ranked list of adjectives. We took the top 4 words and used those as our “high intensity” condition, the bottom 4 as our “low intensity” condition, and we used the word “the” as a neutral condition. We also generated graphs to use as stimuli. Each graph was just a line at a certain angle from the horizontal with some noise added. An example graph (with title) that we would show to a subject. We then ran a study through the crowdsourcing platform Mechanical Turk. We showed subjects one of the generated graphs with one of the three title conditions. We had them do a distractor task where they had to remember a sequence of letters that came across the screen, to prevent them repeating the title or some other information in their head. We asked them to recall the title. We then gave them two trend lines and asked them to choose which one they thought better approximated the graph they saw. One trendline was 5 degrees shallower than the original noisy line and one was 5 degrees steeper. An example of the two slope options we would show to a subject. We found that people who saw a high-intensity title were significantly more likely than those who saw a low-intensity title to pick the steeper line. So changing the title did bias how people reported the content of the graph! A graph showing the results of our study. The y-axis is the fraction of respondants who chose the steeper slope. The lines for each condition show 95% confidence intervals. The none or neutral condition is almost at chance (50%); the difference between the high and low conditions is significant.   I will continue working on this project over the summer and next year, looking at things like if we can bias people to choose an incorrect slope when the correct one is also an option, or if we see the same type of bias with real-world graphs taken from actual news sites. You might be wondering why, as a computer science student doing work in a computer science lab, I ended up presenting at a vision science conference. My group does a lot of research at the intersection of computer vision and visualizations. Computer vision deals with creating computational algorithms for performing vision tasks, such as classifying pictures based on scene location or locating certain objects in photos, whereas the study of visualizations looks at how to create data representations that are effective, accurate, and memorable. We work on creating programs for dissecting and better understanding visualizations like graphs and infographics. For instance, my supervisor has developed a computer model for predicting the visual saliency of a graphic design; recently, we have been working on creating a “visual hashtag” of an image: a text tag and a crop of an infographic that capture its main idea at a glance. So where does human vision come into this? In order to understand what makes an effective visualization, and in order to answer questions about how humans perceive and interact with the visualizations we create, we need to have a more basic understanding of how human vision works. My supervisor, Zoya Bylinskii, has done substantial work in several key areas of vision science in order to lay the groundwork for more advanced treatment of visualizations. In vision science, memorability refers to the brain’s process of retrieving something from memory after it has already been seen and absorbed. Zoya co-authored a paper exploring what makes images and particularly infographics memorable. Attention refers to where people focus when viewing an object; Zoya’s work in this area includes creating a computer interface that can serve as a good approximation for gaze-tracking as a way of figuring out where people look when exploring a visual, and then using data collected in this manner to t rain a computer model to predict where people will look on an arbitrary image. The basic questions about human behavior that vision science tries to answer provide an important motivation and basis for our future work. Plus, the conference was really fun. Who Moved My Cheese? By Spencer Johnson, M. D. In my internal search for ways to deal with change, I have recently read a book which has given me some new ways to think about change. I hope that this review might lead you to this book and help you to see how changes, even when first seen as negative and hurtful, are not necessarily a bad thing. Dr. Spencer Johnson has written a book which gives me some real ways to think about and deal with change. This small book, Who Moved My Cheese, is a fast and easy read but one which can enlighten even a cynical person to some ways to adapt to the inevitable changes of life in its many shifting forms and challenges. Like Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, the story is told as a story within a story of several old friends at a high school reunion told by one of the friends. The story centers around four characters who live in a Maze and the changes with which they must wrangle. The characters are two mice, Sniff and Scurry, and two so-called Littlepeople (creatures the size of mice but who look and act like people today) named Hem and Haw. The plot is pretty simple. The four characters find a large cache of cheese and can live their lives without much variation: get up, go to the cheese, eat, go home, and start over the next day. This works out okay until one day the cheese is gone. Then the characters must deal with the new situation. The mice, taken aback at first, are first to take action since they are creatures of almost entirely instinct: they set out looking for more cheese. On the other hand, Hem and Haw, creatures of reason and emotion, go through a series of reactions from shock to anger to knee-jerking and then to divergence. Hem stays at the now empty cheese station, sulking, complaining, thinking negatively and making even himself more miserable while Haw overcomes his fears and sets out to find new cheese. Filled with metaphor as direct as John Bunyan’s book Pilgrim’s Progress, this book then shows Haw rethinking, adjusting, and moving on with his life. He sets out to find his â€Å"New Cheese,† overcoming his fears and his sense of having been cheated. Along his journey, Haw writes messages of his inner discoveries on the Maze wall, hoping Hem will follow and read the â€Å"writing on the wall† and be comforted by Haw’s inner revelations. His revelations are never dramatic but always true and appropriate for his situation—and ours by extension. The outcome of the book for Haw is doubtful due to Haw’s many fears and doubts about himself on his journey. But by the end, the reader sees Haw succeed in ways that surprise both Haw and the reader. But what about Hem? Does he too succeed? That is where the story-within-a-story ends. And this is where this plot analysis ends. Who Moved My Cheese? begins with an introduction, sets up the story-within-a-story, tells the story of the Mice and LittleMen, and then ends with an analysis of parts of the story by the fictional high school reunion friends who tell parts of their life stories to one another since their graduation. Now, as in Chaucer’s day, this is effective although some critics and some readers want to fend for themselves intellectually—and that’s okay. Now, the reader of this article may ask, what does this have to do with Rapides Parish, teachers, and our mutual situations, and why is this review in a technology newsletter? Simply put, we are all constantly in a stew of change, having to deal with umpteen million rapid-fire often confusing and disheartening failures in the classroom. Technology may be used to enhance a teacher’s already good lessons just as the ideas in Who Moved My Cheese? can make dealing with changes in our lives a little easier with more direction. The story depicts the Littlepeople attacking the same problem with the same tools and failing each time. However, with just a little divergent thinking, Haw is able to break through from his old methods into new techniques and achieve his ultimate goal. Each teacher can find his or her own â€Å"New Cheese† in the classroom using technology tools in the same way and more fully reach the ultimate goal of educating young people. Students grow, have fun and learn at the same time, and meet challenges in ways that please and surprise them as well as their teachers, all the while successfully achieving benchmarks like Haw succeeds at finding his New Cheese. In conclusion, Rapides Parish schools are in for some changes; it is true. But with the use of technology to assist us, we can still accomplish our one unchanging goal. Technology instructors and facilitators can guide us through all of the myriad twists and turns of software and hardware, giving us methods, information, advice, and even pre-written lessons which use technology in every subject area and at every grade level. What Douglass It Made Of Frederick Douglass: an in depth look into the life of a great man Robert B. Lewis V. Kurt Young History 112 Spring 2001 The molding of Frederick Douglass How did the early years of Frederick Douglass life affect the beliefs of the man he would become? Frederick Douglass adulthood was one of triumph and prestige. Still, he by no means gained virtue without struggle and conflict. There was great opposition and hostility towards him. To fully understand all of his thoughts and beliefs, first one must look at his childhood. Frederick Augustus Bailey was born in February of 1818 to a black field hand named Harriet. He grew up on the banks of the Tuckahoe Creek deep within the woods of Maryland. Separated from his mother at an early age, he was raised by his grandparents Betsy and Isaac Bailey. Isaac and Betsy were not thought to be of relation. Isaac was a free man and a sawyer, while Betsy was an owned slave, but she kept her own rules. Her owner trusted her to watch over and raise the children of the slaves until they were old enough to begin their labor. She was allowed to keep her own cabin, and to farm food for the children and hersel f. It was not an easy job. While all of the mothers were busy working in the fields of their master, Aaron Anthony, she was busy watching over their infants. Betsy Bailey was quite a woman. She was a master fisher, and spent most of her days in the river or in the field farming. She was very intelligent and physically able bodied. Most historians credit Fredericks intelligence to his extraordinary grandmother. At the age of six, Fredericks carefree days of running and playing in the fields came to an abrupt end. He was taken away from his grandmother to begin the toil and sweat of the field workers. Here he joined his older brother and sisters, Perry, Sarah and Eliza in the fields of Edward Lloyd. The slave head in charge of Frederick was the cruel cook, Aunt Katy. Although perhaps he deserved some of her wrath, being a very mischievous child, she was undoubtedly a little out of line. She took up a need to abuse him, mentally and sometimes physically. This may have sprouted from resentment against his mother. One of Katys favorite acts of punishment was starvation. On one occasion when Fredericks mother had come to visit, she had committed a terrible deed by interfering in Katys eyes. Later in life Douglass talked very fondly of his mother. He remembers her as having a natural genius, though unprotected and uncultivated.# Douglass was also very proud of her literacy. He never knew her in his older years, however, because she died when he was only seven or eight. Katy also resented Lucretia Auld, a resident of the house who had taken a liking to him, who gave him food when she wouldnt. These were to her just more reasons to be hard on Frederick. After being caught up around Master Lloyds house, Wye House, he was forbidden not to venture near there ever again. Young Douglass loved to watch the people, especially Lloyd. He was a wealthy former Governor of Maryland and a senator and also an ideal example of an exploiter of the very profitable slave system. It is quite feasible that the reason he was so interested in Lloyd was because of Fredericks lack of a father. In fact many historians believe that Lloyd may very well have been the father of this young mulatto. Douglass later knew that his father must have been white which was the only way to explain the light shade of his skin. After exploring the property on many occasions he began to spend time in the garden because he loved spending time with the fragrant smells and vibrant colors. Eventually he met with Lloyds young son Daniel. They became friends and Daniel began to smuggle Frederick in the house through the garden. In slavery it was very common, before puberty, for a slave child to play with the masters children. By the time he was eight it was time for Douglass to pack
